The Pambula Surf Life Saving Club (PSLSC) experienced their own little piece of the World Youth Day (WYD) last week.

Fifty Thai pilgrims were hosted in the area for the couple of days prior to the beginning of WYD in Sydney.

As part of their sight seeing tour of the area, the pilgrims were invited to visit the PSLSC to experience a little of how the voluntary side of the organisation operates.

Few if any of them had any association with the ocean.

The pilgrim party was split into two groups which swapped roles.

One group to investigate the kangaroos at the end of the road.

The other assisted in setting up a training patrol area and took part in simulated tube and board rescues.

They were taught awareness of the dangers of swimming in the surf and the way to remain safe while having fun.

The visitors showed great interest in the presentation, chiefly through the efforts of Peter the interpreter.

This proved to be a worthwhile exercise for all concerned and it was a pleasure to work with such an appreciative group.

SLSNSW has been endeavouring to push through as many conferences and courses as it can during the ever shortening off season.

The Combined Branches Club Conference will be conducted in August in relatively close proximity.

Ordinarily this conference would be attended by members of the club executive but regrettably the timing was unfortunate.

Therefore an offer was extended to club members interested in attending the above mentioned conference at Murramarang Resort, north of Batemans Bay on the August 9 and 10.

Three delegates are required to attend from each club in the South Coast and Far South Coast branches.

The attendees will report back to the Pambula SLSC Management Committee following the conference.

From the information provided "Delegates will be instrumental in formulating processes that will lay the foundation for the future of Surf Life Saving in the South Coast and Far South Coast Branches."

Session times are 8.30am to 5.30pm on Saturday and 8.30am to 1.15pm on Sunday.

Delegate accommodation will be provided in a twin share forest villa for Saturday night.

Murramarang Resort will cater for morning and afternoon tea on both days, lunch on Saturday and a hot buffet breakfast on Sunday.

Dinner on Saturday night will be a barbeque catered for by the conference.

The cost per delegate is $70 but this can be negotiated upon application to Pambula SLSC.

This is one of the more interesting and social conferences and easy introduction into this side of surf life saving.

For those interested in attending this conference on the club's behalf, and for more information, please contact Pambula SLSC Secretary, Sandy Farrell on email: secretary@pambulasurf.org.au, 64 956 474 or 0407 959 312 before Monday, July 21.

The PSLSC boat rowing fraternity would like to give a big vote of thanks to Tara's dad, Roger Mathews, for his mighty job in the rejuvenation of everybody's favourite surf boat, Squizzy.

Reliable sources intimate that the old boat is rowing better than ever.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
